From what I understand Google looks for consistency when getting links. If you have a brand new site that has 0 inbound links then the next week you have 20k, it's more then likely gonna raise some flags. But, if you have slowly build links over time and consistently then you shouldn't have any problems.
If you want to start building some links but you're worried about linking directly to your new site, create a web 2.0 property that links directly to your site and build links to that. You can do this with hubpages, squidoo lense, articles, etc. It won't matter how many links you build to those because they are so well established and get thousands and thousands of links per day.
