what people generally experience in the lower serps is what I call the "snow globe effect" some people call it the "dance" - google shakes the serps "infinity thru #*.*" up periodically to get the sediment off the bottom, well.. all the SE's do for the most part but google does it more effectively than the rest.
Also what happens is what I call the "weight shift effect" or "ripple":
This effect would not be applicable to little sought after keywords, but rather the buzz keywords. Developers on the cutting edge generally are going after the hot stuff, so when something starts getting warm, the devs start jumping in and saturating the market with all the kw spinners. Now your just minding your own business and sitting fine at lets say #7 serp for the kw's you have been hawking for the last year . Then all of the sudden, 50 other guys jump into the your little hot tub and start splashing around, and thus the algorithm changes and then, shaky shaky goes google.. you loose 10 places over night.
Mainly this effect revolves around the cattle drivers. When you don't think your making any noise in the vast forest, they hear you, they investigate - if they see conversion they start driving cattle. The problem is, they are never discreet about it and by their nature, they cause the shift, or the un-balance.
Always remember, when you toss your pebble in the pond, it creates a ripple. Now if the wind is blowing just right, that ripple can become a wave. When others see that wave, some of them grab a surfboard.
