I am trying to write my own footprints and just can't seem to get it right. Can somebody explain, generally how to use footprints and how to write them to customize my own?

do some research as andrey has proposed and then you can start experimenting
all se.'s have their own footprint syntax and in general, most syntax is cross platform, sorta like bb code or html, but yahoo, bing, aol and google do recognize their own proprietary syntax
I can highly recommend that pdf file that's floating around called "SEO_Footprints.pdf". Google it and download it then you've got it. Have one look in there and youll learn a lot of stuff. Like how to find captcha free blogs/directories/forums etc and how to use Google for what it really is. A filtering system. Get your footprints right with SB and you can save loads of time not filtering out results you don't want from what you do.
Yes I've downloaded "SEO_Footprints.pdf" and there is a lot in there! Jam packed with useful information on footprints - I think it will take me the rest of this year to read and understand!
